The material used in Jade Planet, Inc. accessories is made from recycled, reused, or sustainably harvested products. There are bags pieced from denim jeans that did not sell in US thrift stores, a messenger bag made with postconsumer tire rubber fused with natural hemp, and wallets crafted from Washington State Lottery banners that would otherwise have been thrown away. Some of the products are created from filmstrips of movies that are no longer running in theaters, while others currently in the selection are made from polythene bags that are picked up from the streets of cities in India every day. No colors or dyes are used. The many colors of waste plastics that are recovered are combined to achieve the resultant colors of the textiles.

Compared to conventional recycling processes, the proprietary process used in making the textiles in our handbags uses much less energy and causes no pollution. Making a market for these textiles helps reduce the environmental problems caused by plastics, while collecting, cleaning and sorting the waste plastics provides an income stream for the urban poor.
