The material used in Jade Planet, Inc. accessories is made from recycled, reused, or sustainably harvested products. There are three styles made with postconsumer tire rubber fused with natural hemp, bags made from postconsumer telephone books, bags made from limited edition film positives (from "The March of the Penguins) while the others currently in the selection are made from polythene bags that are picked up from the streets of cities in India every day. No colors or dyes are used. The many colors of waste plastics that are recovered are combined to achieve the resultant colors of the textiles.
Compared to conventional recycling processes, the proprietary process used in making the textiles in our handbags uses much less energy and causes no pollution. Making a market for these textiles helps reduce the environmental problems caused by plastics, while collecting, cleaning and sorting the waste plastics provides an income stream for the urban poor.
